We got up and going early and posted some cards on our way
into the old town. We wandered around
the old town a little, to St. Olav’s church and found some pretty crystals back
in the old town near the main square (which has Europe’s only surviving Gothic
town hall). We then joined another free walking tour which took us to the
peace/independence statue, back up through the Gate tower (1380) to Toompea for
more amazing vantage points out over the old town and to the Alexandra Nevsky
cathedral again which was handy for defrosting the toes (another freezing day:
-12 degrees). The tour guide was good but talked a lot which meant we spent a
lot of time standing stationary in the freezing snow… We learnt a bit about
Estonian history and saw inside some more cool churches including the Pikk
Hermann Bastian and the Danish Kings courtyard on Lossi Plats. After the tour
we stopped off at a little souvenir market where I got my fridge magnet and we
got some lunch before catching the tram to Kadriarg park where the old palace
had been turned into a museum which was amazing to see inside. There were also
ice sculptures in the park which were pretty amazing. We walked back from the
museum through the trees and snow and Alanna made a snow angel – very cool. We
caught the tram back to the old town and found a nice Estonian restaurant for
dinner then made our way back to the hostel for a few drinks to celebrate our
last night together. We swapped photos and I packed my gear ready for my 2:30am
departure to the airport for my flight to Russia.
Estonia was amazing, especially the medieval old town in
Tallinn – my favourite Baltic country!
