Sophie's travels 2011-2012: 9/3/2012 Pokhara to Kathmandu, Nepal

We set off early on our 8 hour bus ride from Pokhara to Kathmandu. We drove through more spectacular scenery, lots of rice paddies and beautiful countryside and stopped for fuel in a little village. We ended up having to wait a while for the fuel because a local had to call the guy who owned the fuel pump (who was at home) to come and fill up for us! It was another beautiful warm sunny day so it was nice to be able to stand out in the sunshine for a bit while we waited. We watched kids singing and dancing on the opposite side of the road which was really cute and a few people tasted some local chai.

We made it to Kathmandu in good timing and stopped at the monkey temple before heading to the hotel. The monkey temple was a large complex, it had both Buddhist and Hindu temples inside and loads of cheeky monkeys which were cool to watch. We walked up to the top and had great views out over the sprawling city of Kathmandu, surrounded by loads of colourful prayer flags. You could just see out to the snow covered Himalayas in the distance – spectacular!

The bus dropped us as close to the hotel as it could and then we had to walk a little way because the streets were too narrow for the bus to fit down! We had something to eat and re-packed and weighed our bags (miracle of all miracles mine seemed to be just the right weight which meant I only had to wear 10 rather than 12 layers of clothes on the plane!).

Jenny and I went for a quick explore along the market streets around the hotel before meeting the rest of the group for a walking tour around Kathmandu. We wandered through the narrow winding streets then found a nice place for our last dinner together with a local band playing cultural music which was cool.
