Sophie's travels 2011-2012: 2/3/2012 Varanasi, India

After our confronting awakening I got up and sorted some photos before arriving in Varanasi around 11am. We were taken to our hotel in mini tuk tuks through some absolutely MAD traffic then had some free time to relax in the hotel and shower etc before heading down to the Ganges for sunset. Jenny and I explored the streets near the hotel briefly and bought some water before getting tuk tuks down to the river. We wandered around the banks for a while before floating down the river for sunset. We bought little leaf pockets filled with brightly coloured flower petals and a little candle which we lit then made a wish and set it afloat down the river which was really beautiful. We were rowed past the 2 main crematoriums on the water front which was fairly full on, they are the only crematoriums in India that burn 24 hours a day. The cost of cremation depends on the wealth of the individual and only the male family members escort the body to the crematorium as a sign of respect. We rowed past many different Ghats then stopped along the water front to watch a pilgrimage ceremony which was mesmerising! Lots of incense, candles, bells, singing, lights and arm waving – fascinating and very spiritual!

We finished the night with another crazy tuk tuk ride, delicious garlic naan and finally sleep!
