We drove back through the Pyrenees Mountains and on to Arles in the French Riviera where Van Gough lived. We did a 15 minute walking tour of Arles and saw where he painted the starry night picture, the Van Gough café and a bull fighting arena. In the past bull fighting used to end with the bull dying which no longer happens these days, a ribbon is attached to its horns and the aim is to remove this rather than kill the animal. We saw the amphitheatre built by the Romans which is still used today and the coliseum. We walked past a circus with all the animals in their cages including a big tiger! We then drove along the Cote d’Azur on to Nice in the French Riviera where we set up camp, had a few glasses of wine with dinner and walked 1.5km to the beach past a theme park only to find it was a stone beach! Still very nice and enjoyed a beach sunset.
The beach in front of our campsite first thing in the morning before we left - yes they are people sleeping in the sand! |
