We had an early start to the day with a tour of Pompei, we had a brilliant tour guide and hot sunny day. Pompei was destroyed by a volcano 2000 years ago, with a population of 10,000, 2,000 people died from the gas – there were some amazing museum pieces of plaster casts of people and animals whose bodies were found in the positions they died in trying to cover their mouths from the gases. Pompei was also a harbour town which attracted sailors etc who had been at sea for lengthy amounts of time and hence it thrived on its red light industry. We were taken to a brothel where there were pictures painted on the wall of all the different positions to choose from for the sailors to point to – avoiding any language barriers! In the streets there were carved phallic shapes pointing to where the nearest brothel was located… We explored the Pompei markets then drove to Naples where we caught the ferry to The Isle of Capri which was amazing! Clear blue aqua water and stunning scenery. We caught the steep tube to the first level of the hill to get panoramic views out to sea which was awesome. We then made our way back to the beach for Gelato and a swim in the Mediterranean which was brilliant despite the stone beach! The water is much warmer than Tassie! We caught the ferry back to Sorrento for dinner then made our way back to the campsite.
