11/01/2012 Fes – Merzouga, Morocco

We set off early for the Sahara desert! We drove through amazing scenery including the Middle Atlas Mountains, past little desert oases and stopped in a little town they call the Switzerland of Morocco – where it gets really cold, the fountains were frozen over while we were there but no snow. We drove through a forest with wild monkeys which Laura fed a bag of peanuts – very cute and had lunch at a restaurant in the middle of nowhere which was great (surrounded by desert). We drove on through the desert for a long time – barren, rocky dry land (they call the sand dunes part the Sahara and the rocky parts the desert). We arrived in the Sahara in the dark and got settled in our traditional mud brick rooms. We had an amazing dinner with all sorts of vegies, soup, meats and salad then kicked on with Moroccan music and dancing by candle light and an open fire place – amazing!  Despite 8 hours of driving we had a brilliant day, worth every minute of the drive!
