9/01/2012 Rabat to Fes via Meknes, Morocco

We set off early to The Mausoleum of Mohammed 5th which was really impressive with the early morning light shining on it (another beautiful, blue sunny day). We were the first there so got to appreciate the mosque and surrounding area fully – amazing detailed carving and intricate work, very impressive on the inside and out! From there we drove on down the motorway through plenty more amazing scenery including eucalyptus plantations to Volubilis – Morocco’s largest, best preserved Roman ruins. The ruins were amazing and we had a brilliant tour guide talk us through them so had some laughs along the way. We had an entertaining lunch nearby (the cous cous, tajine, bread and olives were starting to get a bit repetitive at this point…) but the restaurant had amazing views out over a city perched up on the hill top. We continued on through more amazing countryside with donkey’s carting all sorts of goods around (the tour guide said he had seen as donkey carrying a fridge in that area before!!) to Meknes with a 25km stone wall around the medina (old town). Meknes is the 3rd imperial city of Morocco and we got some good pics of the city gates and wall before driving on through to Fes where we faced a load of traffic because the king was arriving the following day. We arrived at the hotel, had a few drinks then went into the new part of the city for dinner which topped off another awesome day.
