Sophie's travels 2011-2012: 25/9/2011 Berchtesgaden, Bavarian Alps to Freising, Germany

We got up and going early, it was a cold frosty morning with mist all through the Alps - very spectacular! We wanted to drive along as much of the 'Romantic road' as possible so we drove up to Regensburg where we wandered into the city centre to the gothic cathedral: Dom Saint Peter which was pretty impressive inside and out. We walked back to the car through a little market and back down Maximillion strasse (the main mall which was fairly empty being a Sunday!). We then drove up to Nuremberg another amazing old town where we wandered across the river and into the city centre to a big market square where the biggest and best Christmas markets in Germany are held each year - pretty good market on for us too! We snacked on some freshly cooked honey and cinnamon roasted cashew nuts (smell amazing!) and walked around the scenic Altstadt - Hauptmark, Pfmarr kirche, Liebe Frau (in the Hauptmarkt), Tiergartrertar - the castle where we walked up for awesome views out over the city. We decided we had time to visit one more stop on the Romantic road before needing to head back towards Munich for our flight the next morning. We drove to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber - a walled German city, which was even better than the others! We drove though more amazing scenery to get there then wandered through the cobbled streets and around the wall. Rothenburg was a really pretty, peaceful feeling place - there was a big garden at the end of the city looking out over amazing rolling countryside and the Tauber valley and there was someone playing classical guitar which made for a beautiful atmosphere. We drove back down to Munich to Freising, near the airport and found a sports centre car park to pitch the tent in for a few hours sleep before our early flight...
