14/8/2011 Sofia, Bulgaria to Lake Ohrid, Macedonia – Contiki tour day 27

After a comfortable night in the hotel we got up and set off for Macedonia – another hot sunny day. The scenery between Bulgaria and Macedonia was amazing, lots of pretty villages in the hills but quite poor and slummy looking. Lots of sun flowers, similar to the rest of Europe! We drove into Skopje the capital of Macedonia which was very poor looking compared top other European cities – lots of scaffolding everywhere and stony dirt footpaths. We walked along the river and over the bridge to the fortress which was very impressive. From Skopje we drove to Lake Ohrid, a 300m deep, 3 million year old, 34 km long lake- the oldest lake in Europe which is filled from under ground springs and rain water. We camped right on the water side which was beautiful.
