10/8/2011 Kavala, Greece to Gallipoli, Turkey – Contiki tour day 23

We had another big morning of driving the past through the boarder between Turkey and Greece. From there were drove along the Sea of Marmara to Gallipoli and ANZAC Cove which was very moving and quite a beautiful place. We visited the museum and field of poppy’s before heading down to the beach to see where the troops landed, it was spine tingling to see the strip of beach they landed on was only 2 metres from the water into the hills in some sections which really meant they had no chance given the hills were full of Turkish troops – of the first 200 men that landed and tried to get over that 2 metres only 20 survived! We wandered along the beach and to the cemetry on the beach front then up to Lone Pine Cemetery. From there we went up to the top of the hill to the NZ cemetery and Turkish cemetery which had amazing views looking out over Anzac Cove. We camped at a camp ground in Gallipoli by the beach and saw a pretty sunset after tasting real Turkish delight and Baklava – very good!
