24/7/2011 Barcelona, Spain – Contiki tour day 6

We started the day with a driving tour of the main sites in Barcelona city including the 1992 Olympic games complex then we did a walking tour around the gothic quarter. We then had or own time to explore the city, I joined another couple on the tour and we got a metro day pass so we could hop on and off the tube and buses as much as we wanted to. The first stop was Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia – the most amazing cathedral I have ever been in. We got an audio guide and spent a few hours there – they say it will still take another 20 years to finish building and has taken the last 40 years so far! Gaudi had a great love for nature and didn’t believe in straight lines so there are no straight lines in any of his works. In the cathedral when you look up to the ceiling the pillars are built to look like trees with leaves coming off from the top, the spires on the outside have big carved baskets of fruit on top of them - it is amazing. From there we took the metro to Park Guell which is full of more buildings/monuments also built by Gaudi from mosaic – great views! We took the metro back into the city and then got on a gondola up the hill for views out over the city.  We headed back into the city to the ‘fairy bar’ – a crazy bar full of trees with faces and people hanging from the roof etc. We then wandered down La Rambla – the main street / mall of Barcelona where we had tapas for dinner!
Olympic Games complex - this is the flame holder (shaped like a medal hanging around an athletes neck)
